UFred partners with CIESS to offer health and safety education to 38 member countries
The University of Fredericton (UFred) partnered with the Inter-American Center for Social Security Studies (CIESS) to provide fully-online occupational health and safety (OHS) education to the organization’s 38 member countries.
Since UFred signed the Singapore Accord in 2018, it has been actively engaging with OHS and business professionals throughout the world to create avenues to deliver OHS education to those who need it most, said UFred President Don Roy.
“We are extremely excited about this partnership and the opportunities that will be created through it for professionals across the Americas,” he added.
The CIESS aims to address the training and preparation needs for professionals in the Americas working toward augmenting the social security of their countries. While the organization already provides a range of in-person academic programs related to health and safety and social security, the partnership with UFred allows the CIESS to reach more professionals through the fully-online format of the courses.
Roy and Dr. Sheri McKillop, UFred’s Vice President of Academics, were in Mexico City for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations on March 20.
McKillop said UFred is proud to partner with institutions that share its passion for improving workplace safety.
“We look forward to combining our OHS educational expertise with the mandate of the CIESS in order to make education more accessible to those in need,” she added.
Reginald Thomas, Director of the CIESS, noted the partnership represents the strengthening of specialized offerings to member countries and is a direct approach to providing solutions to the needs and challenges expressed by members. He noted the occasion is in alignment with its strategic partnership initiative, which is outlined in its 2019-21 strategic plan to bolster its capacity to meet the training, teaching and research needs of its members, as well as the entities that form the social security systems of the American continent.
UFred will initially offer each of its Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace programs to the CIESS constituents, as well as its Ergonomics programs.
Roy is hopeful for future developments.
“This is just the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship for both organizations, and for students and professionals across South America, Central America, and North America alike,” he said.
