For Lisa Moores, education was more than just a means to earn a certificate—it was a path to becoming a stronger leader and mentor in her field. As a Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Coordinator, Lisa is deeply committed to fostering a proactive safety culture in the oil and gas industry. Today, with a Certificate in Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental Systems (COHSES) from the University of Fredericton (UFred), she is better equipped than ever to support her team and drive meaningful changes in her workplace.
Pursuing growth through mentorship and education
A conversation with a team member sparked Lisa’s decision to return to school. “I wanted to advance my knowledge and career as a safety professional,” she explains. “When collaborating with a co-worker I was mentoring at the time, they advised me that it was a great course to help me meet my personal goals.”
UFred’s flexible online format made it the ideal fit for her busy schedule. Balancing full-time work with academic commitments was a challenge at first. “It was daunting at first, especially coming home after a long day to study,” she recalls. “But that feeling quickly turned into an enjoyable routine that I now miss as the program kept me enthusiastic and eager to learn.”
Real-world application: Putting education into practice
The impact of the COHSES program was immediate and lasting. Lisa quickly began applying what she learned to her day-to-day work. “It is now second nature,” she says. “I take pride in being able to help with coaching my team to be the best that they can be with the knowledge that I gained from the program.”
For Lisa, success in safety means more than just following regulations—it’s about building a culture of awareness, accountability, and care. Her work involves guiding team members through the company’s health and safety management system, allowing her to have a direct impact on the safety of others.
Supportive learning with lasting benefits
The highlight of her UFred experience was the flexibility and mentorship that came with it. “The highlight for me was the amazing flexibility that the program offered which allowed me to successfully complete the program, and the professional and positive mentorship from the instructors was outstanding,” she says.
That experience has left a lasting mark on her confidence and career trajectory. “The program gave me the confidence and knowledge that I needed to advance in my career,” she adds.
Looking ahead: A vision for continued professional growth
Lisa is actively working toward continued growth in her field, aiming to become a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP). With her UFred education as a foundation, she is confidently stepping forward on that path.
