Sandra Holmberg didn’t just want to earn a degree, she wanted to make a meaningful impact. As an agri-business owner and financial analyst, her career reflects a strong commitment to business and community development. Now, with an MBA from the University of Fredericton (UFred), she is prepared to continue driving change.
As a lifelong learner, Holmberg saw the value of a business degree in enhancing her skills and broadening her career opportunities. "I believe a business degree can translate to all roles," she explains. With no local options for an MBA, an online program was the most practical choice, allowing her to balance her studies with professional and personal responsibilities. UFred’s online format and unique specialty streams made it the right fit.

Flexible education: Choosing the right MBA stream to make an impact
The variety of specialty streams at UFred was a key factor in Holmberg’s decision. After careful consideration, she chose the Social Enterprise stream, which aligned with her region's strong not-for-profit and mutual aid presence. “I want to support these organizations as an employee, board member or volunteer,” she says. With multiple specialty streams available, students can tailor their education to meet their professional goals—just as Holmberg did.
Applying knowledge in the real world
Holmberg applies nearly every aspect of her coursework to her role as a financial analyst. Her expanded accounting knowledge supports her daily work, while lessons in marketing and economics also play a key role. “I use the knowledge I gained in marketing and economics every day,” she says.
UFred’s MBA program equips students with real-world skills they can apply immediately. Holmberg’s experience highlights how an MBA goes beyond theory — it delivers practical skills that enhance career performance and decision-making.
“The highlight has most definitely been engaging with folks from all over the globe. I find it vital to learn from those with lived experiences. The professors and students certainly had a wealth of knowledge from which I could draw from.”
Advice for future students
Balancing coursework in an MBA program can be challenging, but a strategic approach makes all the difference. Whether managing multiple courses or collaborating in a group setting, thoughtful planning can help students succeed. Holmberg shares this advice for those following a similar path:
“Take it one course at a time. If you have enrolled in two simultaneously, schedule time in your calendar to work on specific assignments and projects. This alleviates any feelings of being overwhelmed ... In a group setting, be cognizant of the strengths of your group members and organize yourselves in such a way that draws upon the assets of each individual [team member].”
Looking ahead: Teaching and social impact
With her MBA complete, Holmberg envisions a future where she can contribute to executive boards of organizations with social missions and the world of academia through teaching. Inspired by her capstone project on global enterprises, Holmberg would like to share her knowledge by teaching college-level courses in business.
Holmberg’s journey through UFred’s MBA program exemplifies the power of education in transforming careers and communities. Her story serves as an inspiration for aspiring students looking to advance their skills and make a lasting impact in their professional and personal lives.
