Long-time real estate professional earns MBA, lands role of President at brokerage firm
John Lusink has more than 34 years of experience in the real estate industry. His background includes an award-winning commercial real estate sales career, management of corporate offices for one of Canada’s iconic real estate brands as well as ownership of a major residential real estate franchise.
Despite his accomplishments and decades of experience, he wanted to earn an MBA. The only thing holding him back was finding a program that could accommodate his busy schedule. The University of Fredericton’s 100% online format was exactly what he was looking for.
“As I moved into more corporate leadership type roles in the real estate sector, I felt an MBA would help me succeed going forward. UFred appeared to offer a very flexible yet concentrated program with a focus in the real estate leadership area that matched my needs,” John said.
John earned his MBA with a specialty in Real Estate Leadership. He feels earning his MBA played a significant part in getting hired in his new role as President of Right at Home Realty Inc., a real estate brokerage firm with more than 5,000 agents.
“I believe it added a level of professional credibility to my resume and certainly supported my level of confidence,” he said.
From early on in his MBA, he was able to apply financial analytical skills and organizational change management to his role. The company also completed an acquisition soon after he joined.
“All of the newfound skills and abilities really played a role in assisting me and my team to complete this (acquisition) successfully,” he added.
The capstone project was a particular point of interest for John as it allowed him to delve into his own industry like never before. In addition, John says he benefitted from the experiences of his fellow students and the direct input of the instructors. In fact, throughout the 2.5-year program, he says one of the most valuable experiences was working on team projects.
“My experience with both the peer groups and instructors was excellent. The online class format and especially group projects really made the program come to life in real time,” he added.
John says that of equal importance was the critical thinking processes applied throughout all courses.
For current and future students, John’s advice is simple: stay focused on completing the program and take advantage of any opportunity to interact with both peers and instructors.
Given the global pandemic, John’s goals have shifted to suit the needs of the organization.
“My goals are to guide our firm through the current crisis, which is putting all my education to maximum use, and to lead it back to pre-COVID success.”
John is an active participant in organized real estate both as a Director for The Toronto Real Estate Board – a 50,000-member association – and most recently as Commercial Director for The Ontario Real Estate Association – a 70,000-member association.
In addition, John is a long-time Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) as well as a Council of Real Broker Managers (CRB) designee and a Fellow of the Real Institute (FRI). He is also a trainer and coach for several designation programs for The Real Estate Business Institute (REBI).
