UFred launches new Bachelor of Computer Science program

In a bold move to meet the demands of one of Canada’s fastest-growing industries, the University of Fredericton (UFred) has launched its first-ever Bachelor of Computer Science (BCS) program.

The BCS is yet another example of our commitment to providing career-ready programs built for today’s learners. “At UFred, we’re dedicated to meeting the real needs of learners and employers … This expansion reflects our belief in preparing students for the future—on their terms,” said Dr. Michael Hobeck, Provost & Vice President, Academics at the University of Fredericton.

With more than two decades of expertise in online education, UFred’s latest offering reflects a deep belief in equipping Canadians for success in a changing world. “The rapid pace of technological advancement and the growing demand for skilled professionals in the tech industry inspired the launch of UFred’s Bachelor of Computer Science program,” said Dr. Sabine McConnell, Chair of Computer Science at UFred.

The BCS is built to serve Canada’s expanding tech sector. “The talent gap in tech is growing, and Canada requires responsive, scalable education models to close it. By launching this now, we’re creating new opportunities for learners to thrive in expanding digital fields,” added Dr. Hobeck.

Students can expect a Bachelor of Computer Science built on UFred’s proven model of accessible and flexible education. Being fully online, it allows students to learn on their schedule, from anywhere, and aims to train for impact not just employment. “Our program was built in close collaboration with industry professionals to ensure students gain the skills employers are hiring for … With a strong focus on hands-on, project-based learning, students apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios,” said Dr. McConnell. “Whether we are helping recent high school graduates or adults making a career shift, we built the program to meet students where they are and help them get to where they want to go.”

It is only in recent years that many institutions have pivoted to online learning. UFred, however, was founded on it. “Our programs weren’t adapted for digital delivery—they were built for it from the ground up. This foundation gives us the agility to respond to today’s realities and tomorrow’s opportunities,” said Dr. Hobeck. The BCS at UFred is no different. “We understand that today’s learners need to balance their education with other commitments. Our online format allows them to do so without compromising on quality,” adds Dr. McConnell.

The Bachelor of Computer Science is just the first step in a larger strategy to grow tech offerings at UFred. “This launch sends a clear message that UFred is future-focused and committed to developing highly skilled, job-ready graduates,” said Dr. Hobeck. From coding to cybersecurity, data analysis to system administration, the possibilities are vast, and the impact is real. “This program has the potential to transform not just individual lives, but entire organizations and communities. These ripples create real change, and that’s what drives us,” added Dr. Hobeck.
