Today, September 22, 2025, marks an exciting milestone for the University of Fredericton (UFred): welcoming our very first class of students to our new Bachelor of Computer Science (BCS) program.
For over 20 years, UFred has been known for flexible, online programs that combine academic excellence with real-world relevance. Now, with the addition of the BCS, we are expanding into the fast-growing technology sector. We are proud to offer students the opportunity to build in-demand skills while studying online, on their own schedule.
The people behind the program
Dr. Sabine McConnell – Program Chair, Computer Science
At the helm of the new program is Dr. Sabine McConnell, who brings decades of experience in teaching, program development and academic leadership. Having launched and chaired major programs at Trent University—including a graduate program in Big Data — Dr. McConnell is no stranger to building forward-looking academic pathways.
“What excites me most about UFred’s Computer Science program is the opportunity to create something modern and relevant from the ground up,” says Dr. McConnell. “Our students are not just learning code. They are developing the adaptability and problem-solving mindset that will carry them through decades of technological change.”
Beyond her academic leadership, Dr. McConnell is passionate about fostering communities of care, whether that is through guiding students or helping rescue animals through the charity she founded. Her blend of expertise and compassion will help shape the culture of UFred’s Computer Science community.
Dr. Stuart Thiel – Full-Time Faculty, Computer Science
Joining Dr. McConnell in shaping the student experience is Dr. Stuart Thiel, who brings deep expertise to the Computer Science program. Dr. Thiel’s career has spanned teaching at UNB and Concordia, running a games research lab and advancing privacy rights. His teaching style emphasizes inclusivity, curiosity and connecting technical skills with real-world impact.
“I want students to see computer science as more than just screens and syntax,” says Thiel. “It's about structured problem-solving, fairness and building tools that actually help people. That’s the mindset I hope to pass on to our first cohort.”
With passions that range from martial arts to inclusive education, Dr. Thiel brings energy and a sense of possibility into the classroom.
Educating the future of tech leaders
The BCS program is designed for learners who want more than just technical know-how. Students will graduate with transferable skills like problem solving, critical thinking and innovation—skills that are highly valued across industries.
With a degree from a recognized Canadian institution, UFred Computer Science graduates will be ready to pursue roles in areas such as:
Software and application development
Cybersecurity and data protection
Systems analysis and IT consulting
Artificial intelligence and data science
Whether students are just starting out in tech or making a career change, this program gives them the flexibility and credibility they need to succeed.
Looking ahead
The launch of the Bachelor of Computer Science program marks a bold step forward for UFred and for the students who make up its first cohort.
“Technology is reshaping the world faster than ever before,” says Dr. Michael Hobeck, Provost & Vice President, Academics at the University of Fredericton. “The real change-makers will be the people who know how to use it responsibly, creatively and inclusively. That is the journey our students are beginning today.”
The future of tech begins here, with this remarkable first cohort. Please join us in congratulating them and cheering them on as they complete their studies.
