Executive MBA alum Michael Ghazi leverages his education to seamlessly transition into the role of General Manager

Michael Ghazi serves as the General Manager for the Edmonton branch of Tridon Communications. He oversees multiple teams, including structured cabling and fiber optics, wireless service, rentals, and inventory. In this role, Michael ensures the safety and development of his staff, oversees the company's financial performance, and ensures customers have a positive experience with all staff.

Without an undergraduate degree, Michael felt the need to bolster his business acumen to advance his career. Initially, he considered completing certificate programs to fill the perceived gap, but a pivotal conversation with Tridon’s Chief Administrative Officer led him to contemplate an MBA instead. This suggestion resonated with Michael, who saw the value in pursuing a comprehensive business education.

Highlights of the UFred experience and program applicability

Michael needed a flexible, online program to accommodate his full-time job. After comparing various options, he found the University of Fredericton (UFred) to be the best fit. The primary differentiators between UFred and other universities were the accessible admissions staff, the ability to utilize the Canadian Forces Education and Training Benefit, and the unique Pre-MBA course offering. These courses prepare non-degree students with a foundation to enter a master’s level program, which ultimately helped build Michaels's confidence before entering the Executive MBA program.

Despite the Executive MBA taking place fully online, Michael felt the highlight of his experience was the ability to connect with other professionals at similar places in their careers. With this, he was exposed to “…different perspectives from people with vastly different educational backgrounds, professional experience, and culture giving me new perspectives on business.”

In discussing the applicability and benefits of the Executive MBA program, Michael highlighted his ability to apply his education with ease, stating, “I apply something that I learned in the program to my current role nearly every day.” Not only has he been able to use his newfound business knowledge, but it also led to an exciting opportunity: Michael was promoted to General Manager with Tridon Communications.

“Embarking on the journey to earn an MBA, showed Tridon’s leadership that I am invested in my future and that I strive for more. When there was a change in upper management, they selected me to fill the vacant General Manager role.”

Moving forward: Professional goals

Michael’s professional goal is to advance to a top executive position, such as Vice President of Operations or Chief Operating Officer. He believes that blending professional experience with advanced business education will pave the way for career progression and leadership opportunities. Furthermore, he believes his ability to analyze operations and finances and drive innovation will be instrumental in achieving these goals.
