MBA alum James Lowrie embraces lifelong learning while forging lasting friendships

After numerous years of consideration, James Lowrie decided it was time to embark on his MBA journey. There were two driving factors behind this choice: he wanted to set an example for his kids, reinforcing the importance of continued education at any stage of your life or career, and he wanted to develop a deeper understanding of business practices.

As a strategic account manager, James is tasked with identifying customer pain points and advising on solutions. By developing a business-focused skillset, he felt he could serve his customers better, making him a stronger asset in his role.

While searching for a place to complete his online MBA, James discovered the University of Fredericton. Given the flexible online format, the positive reviews and accolades, and its Canadian heritage, it was an easy choice.

Highlights of the UFred experience and program applicability

James found transitioning back to academia after years in the workforce slightly daunting, particularly considering the time management skills required with additional personal and professional responsibilities. However, he was pleasantly surprised by how quickly everything came back to him. With dedicated professors and a supportive learning environment, James adapted seamlessly.

Reflecting on his overall experience, James highlights the invaluable connections he forged with classmates and faculty. Collaborating with individuals from various backgrounds enriched his learning journey and fostered lasting friendships.

“I would have to say, the biggest highlight for me was the friends that I made during group work. You work with these diverse people from all over the place, and it makes for such a great experience. I think it’s amazing that I made these connections with people, and yet I’ve never met them face to face.”

In addition to the new connections made, James also spoke to the profound impact his MBA has had on his career. The program equipped him with a deeper understanding of business nuances, empowering him to navigate complex challenges and identify strategic opportunities within his role.

Moving forward: Goals and advice to future students

Looking ahead, James sees his MBA journey catalyzing future endeavors, igniting a passion for academic excellence and leadership development. James has chosen to pursue further education with a Doctor of Education in Leadership and remains grateful for UFred's role in his ongoing pursuit of knowledge and professional growth.

“I think the MBA in Global Leadership from UFred prepared me very well to take the next step. Looking at the Doctor of Education in Leadership, I think that right now it feels like a continuation of where I left off with the MBA.”

For those considering embarking on the MBA journey but unsure if it’s the right time, James offers a piece of advice:

“I would say honestly the biggest piece of advice I could give, and I know this is very simplistic, but ‘just do it’. Don’t hesitate, jump in with both feet and do it.”
