The University of Fredericton to offer Inaugural Virtual Convocation for MBA and EMBA grads, seeking Valedictorian nominations

The University of Fredericton is pleased to announce that we will be holding a virtual Inaugural Convocation for MBA and EMBA alumni who graduated between 2007 and 2021. The convocation will be taking place on May 7th, 2022, beginning at 10:00 A.M EST. To register for convocation, please follow this link.


As a part of this celebration, UFred is now seeking applications for Valedictorian. The deadline to submit applications will be on March 15th, 2022, and all required information is below:


Are you Eligible? You must meet the following requirements:

  • You held a minimum GPA of 3.5

  • You have passing grades in all courses in the program

  • You have a clean student record with no reported incidents and are free from any formal student conduct actions


Application/Nomination Process


To begin the process, a nominator will complete the Valedictorian nomination form which requires information on both the nominee and nominator (i.e., names, contact details, program of study, and explanation of the nomination choice).


Each nominee will be required to submit two letters of reference, to be sent to alumni@ufred.ca:

  • One from a UFred faculty/ academic member

  • One from a fellow graduate


Selected nominees will be contacted for interviews with the Selection Committee. The interview will comprise of a question-and-answer session to better understand the graduates experience within their program. Additionally, nominees will be required to deliver a brief speech (5 minutes maximum) to share remarks and themes they will use if selected as Valedictorian.


Nominees are able to nominate themselves or another MBA/EMBA graduate.

The Selection Committee shall be comprised of:

  • The Dean (or designate)

  • The Associate Dean (or designate)

  • The Registrar (or designate)

  • Two SSB Professors

Please note: Any person who wrote a letter of reference for a candidate will be considered ineligible to serve on the Selection Committee.

The Valedictorian will be selected based on the following:

  • Fulfillment of the eligibility requirements

  • Positive endorsement by referees

  • Quality and content of interview speech

Timeline and further details for the selection process

  • On the day of a candidate’s interview, the candidate should ensure a digital copy of their prepared speech is provided to the Selection Committee.

  • Following the interviews, candidates will be notified of the Selection Committee’s decision within two weeks, at minimum one month prior to convocation.

  • A member of the Selection Committee will be designated to serve as an advisor to the valedictorian to assist in workshopping and rounding out their speech.

  • A final draft of the speech must be made available to the advisor at least three days prior to convocation for review.
