Does it ever feel like everyone else has a five-year plan…and you somehow missed the memo?
Scrolling through social media, it may seem like your peers have their careers and future plans all figured out. Meanwhile, your direction isn’t as clear.
It’s no wonder many people in their 20s feel pressure to decide exactly where their lives are headed. In reality though, your twenties are one of life’s biggest periods of change. Uncertainty is totally normal.
After high school graduation, many prospective students say they are not sure about their career path, education goals or next steps. That’s completely fine. In fact, our twenties are often a decade of exploration, change and self-discovery.
Rather than waiting until you’re absolutely certain about your life path before taking the next step, university can be the place where clarity begins to take shape. Like a Polaroid photo, your path often comes into focus slowly, not all at once.
If you feel stuck, a university degree can help with forward momentum. The helpful Program Advisors at the University of Fredericton (UFred) can play a role in charting your way forward, with flexible online learning that supports students as they find their flow.
Know this: you don’t need a perfect career plan before you take the first step. The time it takes to explore our interests is a worthwhile investment in your future, and our interests evolve as we learn more information.
With online learning, you can try different subjects, discover your strengths, learn transferable skills and build a ton of confidence along the way. In the process of learning from professors, getting feedback on assignments and collaborating with peers, you will begin to make informed decisions rather than guessing about your future. Plus, you may discover a career option you didn’t even know existed.
University can help you build career direction and eventually land a job. But at its core, post-secondary programs offer a structured learning environment where you can discover your interests and find your voice. Earning a valuable credential that has the power to change your life for the better is the cherry on top.
Start with curiosity. Try to approach university with a beginner’s mindset, which is all about confronting new situations with openness. Drop any preconceived notions you may have and just see what happens.
Instead of asking “what career do I want to do forever?” ask yourself:
What topics keep my attention?
Which assignments have I enjoyed?
What skills do I want to build?
What problems do I like solving?
Interests and passions emerge through learning and experimentation. It’s your job to listen to that pull. But it’s okay if you don’t know which program to choose right away. A Program Advisor can help you. As you begin your life-changing education journey, you will start to see possibilities for your future fall into place.
Life doesn’t stop while you’re deciding what to do next, and your education doesn’t have to wait for the “perfect” moment either.
Career plans don't always follow a straight line. Sometimes your interests evolve after you've already started college or university. Other times, work experience points you toward a different future than the one you originally imagined.
If you've already completed post-secondary courses, you may not have to start from the beginning. The University of Fredericton's Transfer Credit Tool lets you quickly see whether your previous studies may be eligible for transfer credit before you apply. It's a simple way to understand how your past learning could help you move forward.
From there, you can choose a program that aligns with where you want to go next. Consider these examples:
A student begins their post-secondary education at another university but realizes the program is not the right fit. Interested in technology and problem-solving, they use UFred’s Transfer Credit Tool to see whether their previous courses may count toward a Bachelor of Computer Science. They can build on what they have already completed while moving toward a field that better reflects their interests.
Another student knows they are interested in business but has not yet settled on a specific career path. They choose a Bachelor of Business Administration to develop a broad foundation in areas such as marketing, finance, leadership and operations. Along the way, they can discover which aspects of business interest them most and begin shaping their future direction.
Someone completes a Bachelor of Arts but realizes they're drawn to the fast-changing world of digital marketing. They enroll in UFred's Master of Digital Marketing, developing skills in AI-assisted marketing, digital strategy and analytics that prepare them for new career opportunities.
A business professional earns an undergraduate business degree and later decides it's time to pursue an MBA. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all curriculum, they choose one of 11 specialty streams at UFred. This allows them to tailor their degree to their interests and career goals, whether that's artificial intelligence leadership, innovation, finance, global leadership or another area of business.
Life doesn’t stop while you’re deciding what to do next, and your education doesn’t have to wait for the “perfect” moment either. Becoming an online student allows you to work toward your future without putting the rest of your life on hold.
Online university gives students the flexibility to keep working, manage existing commitments and choose a course load that fits their circumstances. With structured courses and support along the way, UFred students can make steady progress toward a degree while continuing to meet the responsibilities they already have.
In your 20s, you might not know exactly what you want to do yet. That’s okay. There’s real value to starting your post-secondary education before you have everything figured out.
University is where you can explore your interests, develop new skills and gain the confidence to make more informed decisions about your future. Even if uncertainty creeps in, work to turn doubt into direction. The experience provides foundational skills for the future and will inch you closer to eventual career goals.
Many UFred graduates tell us they only wish they’d started sooner.
