FREDERICTON, N.B. — The University of Fredericton (UFred) is entering a bold new chapter marked by transformative leadership and expansion. The institution is preparing for its first-ever presidential transition and new academic leadership. It’s also growing beyond its business and health and safety roots into the in-demand world of technology.

First presidential transition in UFred’s 20-year history

Don Roy, the visionary founder who led UFred to the respected online institution it is today, is now stepping into the role of Senior Advisor. Trevor Pothier, a long-serving executive leader who brings nearly a decade of progressive experience within the university, has been appointed as the new President.

“I’m proud to lead UFred into its next chapter,” says Pothier. “Together with our dedicated team, we’re advancing the future of education in ways that truly empower modern learners."

Roy’s legacy of leadership and unwavering dedication to students has paved the way for this next phase of growth. “This is absolutely the most exciting time in UFred’s history,” says Roy.

“We have so many new degrees, and so many new people, and so many opportunities to grow on a large scale. I have full confidence in Trevor's leadership to continue the momentum of what we’ve built here.”

Pothier takes on the role with deep knowledge of UFred’s mission and belief in what the institution stands for. He has been a key driver of UFred’s operational success, strategic growth, and student-first innovation over the past eight years.

A continued focus on academic excellence

Dr. Michael Hobeck is also stepping into the role as Provost & Vice President, Academics. Previously UFred’s Dean of Programs, Hobeck’s familiarity with UFred’s academic framework and student-centric approach is critical as the university continues to evolve.

With Hobeck’s leadership, UFred will continue to strengthen its academic offerings, ensuring that the institution remains at the forefront of online education and prepares students for success.

“I am honored to step into this role at a pivotal moment for UFred,” says Hobeck. “I look forward to enhancing our programs to ensure they continue to meet the needs of our students, empowering them to thrive in a rapidly changing world.”

Expanding into in-demand tech education

UFred is also announcing a major academic milestone: the launch of a Bachelor of Computer Science (BCS) program. This marks the university’s expansion into the fast-growing technology sector.

“This new program is made for people who want to build in-demand tech skills and future-proof their careers, online and on their own schedule,” says Pothier.

“It's the next evolution of our mission to remove barriers and build real-world leaders.”

This BCS program joins UFred’s respected portfolio of undergraduate and graduate business and occupational health and safety programs, all designed with the flexibility and relevance that working professionals need.
