How Misty Ward reshaped her future through UFred’s MBA

Published on Feb 17, 2026

Misty chose the University of Fredericton’s fully online MBA because it made growth possible right now. What she did not anticipate was how quickly the decision would begin to change her career. Before graduating, Misty earned two promotions.

Today, as a UFred MBA alumna, she reflects on the experience as a turning point that reshaped not only her professional path but her confidence and sense of self.

A personal experiment that turned into something bigger

Coming from a science-based undergraduate background, stepping into an MBA program felt unfamiliar. “Coming from a science-based undergrad background, this opportunity was a huge step outside of my comfort zone. But that's exactly what makes it so valuable.”

She approached the MBA as a personal experiment. It was not just a test of academic ability but an opportunity to stretch her thinking and explore new ways of leading.

“I was ready to challenge myself and grow in new directions. It’s an investment in your career and in your personal growth.”

Finding her voice and her place

The early months of the program were filled with excitement and self-doubt. Imposter syndrome surfaced quickly. Misty remembers sitting in her first classes wondering if she belonged. Many of her peers held senior leadership roles and brought years of experience into the virtual classroom.

Over time, her perspective began to shift. Through discussions and group work, she realized that learning was reciprocal. While she absorbed insights from others, she also discovered that her own experiences and ideas carried weight.

“One of the most beautiful parts of this journey was discovering that learning goes both ways. We all taught each other, challenged one another and grew together.”

Those academic relationships soon deepened. Late-night group chats, collaborative brainstorming sessions and shared laughter helped transform classmates into friends. They became an unexpected and lasting part of her MBA experience.

Making learning fit real life

Balancing work, school and personal life required intention. But the course schedule aligned well with Misty's work shifts, ensuring no conflicts.

Misty learned to use the natural rhythms of her day to stay on track, often completing readings or discussion posts during breaks to keep evenings and weekends manageable. “I often used my lunch breaks to do reading assignments or discussion posts,” she says. “That balance is key when you’re trying to manage everything at once.”

Recorded lectures were especially helpful in more technical courses such as accounting and finance. “The recorded classes were a game changer,” she says. “I could pause, rewatch and take notes. It gave me total control of my learning.”

Over time, Misty developed study habits that made steady progress possible. She now sees those habits as skills she will carry with her well beyond her degree.

“It takes time and commitment, but it’s absolutely doable. It forces you to become more intentional with how you use your time, and that in and of itself is such a valuable skill.”

Turning learning into leadership

When Misty began the program, she was working as an associate material validation specialist. Not long after, she was promoted to supervisor. Soon after that, she advanced again to senior supervisor. “I take that as my manager having direct confidence in my increasing abilities as I took on these new responsibilities,” she says.

The timing aligned closely with what she was learning in her MBA. Her coursework gave her practical tools she could apply immediately. Misty valued the wide variety of courses offered at UFRED, especially the many specialty stream options, which allowed her to tailor her education to her professional interests. That focus helped her connect long-term strategy to everyday decision making in the workplace.

“Innovation isn't a typical focus in most MBA programs. This stream gave me the frameworks and tools to turn ideas into strategy, and that’s something a lot of workplaces are missing.”

Becoming the best version of herself

For Misty, earning an MBA was never just about a credential. It was about resilience, confidence and stepping out of her comfort zone.

“This MBA program hasn't just helped me grow as a professional. It has helped me evolve as a person.”

Now, as a proud UFred MBA graduate, she encourages others who may be hesitating to invest in themselves. “Go for it,” she says. “You’ll be amazed at what you’re capable of when you commit to something meaningful.”
