When AI answers are everywhere, education matters more than ever

It is understandable that people are debating whether university is still worth the time, effort and cost. Artificial intelligence can summarize a report, explain a difficult concept, draft an argument and generate code in seconds.

But higher education and AI are not opposing paths.

The printing press made books more widely available. Later, the internet made much of the world’s information searchable. Neither advancement eliminated the need for higher education.

Canada needs people who can use AI well

There is a clear need across Canada for people to understand how to use AI effectively and responsibly. Consultations that informed Canada’s national AI strategy identified national AI literacy and lifelong learning as key themes. Participants also called for education that combines digital literacy with AI expertise while emphasizing ethics and critical thinking. They envisioned an AI-augmented workforce in which technology strengthens rather than replaces human expertise.

Reaching this vision will require more than giving people access to increasingly powerful tools. It will require people who can understand their outputs, apply informed judgment and take responsibility for how they are used. Universities have an important role in developing those capabilities.

Higher education is not becoming obsolete

Canada’s working-age population is becoming more highly educated, not less. Educational attainment in Canada has continued to rise over the past decade.

In 2025, nearly two-thirds of Canadian adults aged 25 to 64 held a college or university credential, compared with 55 per cent a decade earlier. According to Statistics Canada, the proportion with a bachelor’s degree increased from 20 to 25 per cent, while the proportion with a master’s or doctoral degree rose from nine to 14 per cent.

These long-term trends are influenced by several factors, including younger and more highly educated generations entering the workforce. But they nevertheless challenge the idea that formal education is no longer relevant.

The ability to produce an answer should not be confused with education.

Educated workers are already using AI

Generative AI is quickly becoming part of Canadians’ working lives. An analysis of the Canadian Survey on Working Conditions by Statistics Canada found that generative AI was the most prevalent technology used at work from September 2024 to July 2025. The proportion of workers who used generative AI nearly doubled over the survey period, increasing from 17% in September 2024 to 30% in July 2025.

AI adoption has not been concentrated among workers with the least education. The opposite pattern has emerged. Workers with university credentials were among those most likely to report using these tools.

The same Statistics Canada analysis found that workers with a bachelor’s degree or higher were five times more likely to have used generative AI in the last 12 months (37%) than those with a high school diploma or a lower level of education (7%).

The evidence does not point to a choice between education and AI. It shows educated people already working with AI. Because when change accelerates, the rational response is more learning, not less.

Access is not the same as understanding

The ability to produce an answer should not be confused with education. If graduates leave knowing how to produce answers but not how to examine them, the institution has not done enough.

Generative AI can propose solutions, identify patterns and present information confidently. It can also produce inaccurate information, amplify bias and overlook important context.

To recognize a weak answer, a person needs enough subject knowledge to know what may be missing. To challenge a recommendation, they must be able to question its assumptions, evaluate the evidence and consider the consequences. This is where universities play a critical role.

A strong university education takes students through a coherent body of knowledge. It exposes them to competing perspectives and asks them to complete increasingly complex work. Students must apply ideas, defend conclusions, respond to criticism and explain their reasoning. These are some of the same capabilities required to use AI well.

Accountability cannot be automated

AI can help produce work, but it cannot accept responsibility for that work. It cannot assume professional responsibility for a harmful recommendation, repair trust after a poor decision or explain why efficiency was valued over fairness. The person or organization using the system still owns the outcome.

Students must learn that accountability cannot be delegated. This becomes increasingly important as AI contributes to decisions affecting businesses, employees, customers and communities. The more powerful the tool, the more important it becomes to understand who remains answerable for its use.

The more capable artificial intelligence becomes, the more important human intelligence will be.

Workplace-ready AI skills learned at UFred

UFred is teaching the leaders of tomorrow how to use AI confidently, critically and responsibly. Rather than treating artificial intelligence only as a standalone topic, the University of Fredericton is integrating practical AI literacy across relevant programs and courses.

This is especially important in business and marketing, where AI is increasingly influencing how organizations analyze information, understand customers, communicate, make decisions and compete. The same is true in computer science, where AI is changing how software is developed, systems are designed and complex technical problems are solved.

AI as an amplifier of human intelligence

The purpose of university is not to compete with a machine. It is to educate people who can use powerful tools without surrendering their knowledge, judgment or responsibility.

AI can generate an answer, but that is not a threat to higher education. Education helps people determine whether that answer is accurate, whether it is useful and whether it deserves to guide action. It also prepares people to take responsibility for the decisions they make with it.

The more capable artificial intelligence becomes, the more important human intelligence will be. Universities are where people learn to make AI an amplifier of human intelligence rather than a substitute for it.
