Starting a new program is a big decision, and at the University of Fredericton, we make sure you don’t take that first step alone.
Our friendly and knowledgeable Program Advisors are often the first people students speak with at UFred. Their role is to help you explore your options and decide if a UFred program is the right fit for you, without having to figure it all out on your own.
We asked Program Advisors Micheal Mularz and Bradwell Brewer, as well as former Program Advisors Caitlin Rankine (now a Transfer Credits and Pathways Coordinator) and Gina Ouellet (now Manager of Student Recruitment), to share how they support prospective students.
The best time to connect with a Program Advisor is when you’re starting to explore your higher education options. You might be comparing programs, wondering if you’re eligible or questioning whether now is the right time to go back to school.
Program Advisors help at the research and decision-making stage, before you apply. They can also support you through the application process, helping make a big decision not so scary.
“You do not have to have it all figured out before reaching out,” Gina explains. In fact, that early curiosity is exactly when Program Advisors can be most helpful.
Program Advisors support students by focusing on the full picture, not just program details. Every conversation starts with understanding who you are, what you’re hoping to achieve and what your life looks like right now.
Caitlin describes those early conversations as a chance to learn about a student’s career goals, education and personal experiences, so she can help identify programs that truly fit. From there, Program Advisors walk students through expectations and next steps, helping them feel prepared instead of overwhelmed.
Explore programs that align with your career goals and experience
Complete eligibility pre-assessments based on your education and work history
Explain course expectations, workload and time commitment
Program Advisors act as a sounding board. They answer questions honestly, explain options clearly and help you move forward toward your goals.
Many students reach out feeling unsure. Some worry they are not eligible. Others wonder if they waited too long or if balancing school with work and family is realistic.
That “change in tone from being defeated to the excitement that they might actually be able to achieve their goal really brings a smile to my face,” says Bradwell.
Caitlin remembers one student who hesitated before enrolling in UFred’s Executive MBA. The student already had significant education and management experience and wasn’t sure the program made sense. Caitlin helped her confirm the fit, plan around her schedule and identify how the program could bridge knowledge gaps. The student stayed in touch throughout her studies, graduated as valedictorian and later earned a promotion to the C-suite.
From a Program Advisor’s perspective, UFred stands out because our programs are online, flexible and designed for working professionals. Students can apply what they learn in real time and connect with peers from across the country, creating a rich and diverse learning experience.
As both a UFred staff member and student, Caitlin adds that she never imagined completing a master’s degree until she found a model that truly worked with her life. The flexibility, part-time structure and engaging discussions made it possible to balance work, life and learning without feeling overwhelmed.
If you’re considering furthering your education, start by asking questions. Do your research. Talk to schools directly and make sure the fit is right for you. Micheal reminds prospective students not to be afraid to ask questions. “We’re here to help support you. You’re not expected to know all the answers,” he says.
If you’re feeling a little hesitant, you’re not alone. Many students feel that way at the beginning. But the most common thing Program Advisors hear later is “I wish I had started sooner.”
If you’re exploring your education options or wondering what’s possible, a conversation with a Program Advisor can help you move forward with clarity and confidence.
You are invited to call, email or set up a face-to-face video appointment with a Program Advisor at your convenience.
