At the University of Fredericton, success isn’t just about completing coursework. It’s about knowing there’s someone you can turn to when questions come up, plans change or you simply need reassurance that you’re on the right track.
That’s where Student Services Specialists come in. We asked Student Services Specialists Victoria Purchase and Jacinda Greer about how they support students from their first questions to graduation day.
A Student Services Specialist will connect with you as soon as your program begins, and often even before your first course starts. They remain a constant presence throughout the program, making sure students know we've got your back.
Victoria explains that students can connect at “any time in their program,” whether they’re preparing to start, looking for information mid-program or wrapping things up as they approach the end of their studies. Jacinda adds that Student Services Specialists become a student’s “first point of contact throughout the program,” helping create continuity and trust.
Student Services Specialists support students with a wide range of questions and requests, helping remove uncertainty so students can focus on learning.
They assist with:
Course and program information
Document requests
Program or course withdrawals
General guidance throughout your studies
Victoria describes the role as being a central source of knowledge. Student Services Specialists have a deep understanding of UFred’s programs and processes and are always happy to help students find the information they need, when they need it.
One of the most rewarding parts of the role is seeing students progress from uncertainty to confidence.
Victoria especially enjoys supporting students through to graduation. After answering questions, guiding decisions and offering reassurance along the way, sending a student their application to graduate becomes a meaningful milestone. Sharing in that excitement, particularly after supporting a student from the very beginning of their program, is what makes the role so fulfilling.
Jacinda shares a moment that stayed with her. A former student she had supported throughout their program returned as an alumni to speak during an orientation session. Hearing them speak so positively about their experience and the support they received was a powerful reminder of the impact Student Services can have.
Student Services Specialists know that choosing a university is a major commitment. Beyond academics, students want an experience that feels supportive and connected.
Jacinda highlights UFred’s diversity and the strength of its online learning environment. Students learn alongside peers from many backgrounds and are supported by engaged faculty who care deeply about student success.
Victoria adds that UFred’s innovative online programs and flexibility make it possible for students to balance education with the rest of their lives, without feeling disconnected from the university community.
Together, they see how consistent support helps students feel more confident, engaged and motivated throughout their studies.
Both Victoria and Jacinda encourage students to reach out whenever questions arise and to take full advantage of the UFred support system.
Victoria reminds students to never hesitate to ask questions and to enjoy the experience, including the opportunity to network with peers. Many lasting professional and personal connections begin in UFred’s interactive online classrooms.
Jacinda encourages students to approach their studies with an open mind. Feeling nervous at the start is common, especially for those returning to school after time away. With the right support, she reassures students, they’ll find their place and feel proud to be part of the UFred community.
