Figuring out how to pay for your education can feel like one of the biggest hurdles to getting started. There are forms to complete, deadlines to meet and important details to understand. Many wonder whether they can make it work financially.
The Student Loan Officer at the University of Fredericton is here to help you understand your options. We asked Student Loan Officer Jivi Mann to share how she supports students through the funding process.
Many students reach out to Jivi before they even apply. At that stage, questions often come up about course load, study period or where to find the right information to begin. You might also connect with Jivi after you’ve submitted your student loan application, especially when documentation is required or enrolment needs to be confirmed.
Jivi’s role is to support you on both sides of the process. She helps you understand the program details needed for your application. She’ll also complete required school forms and confirm your enrolment so your funding can move forward without delays.
The good news is that there are many funding options available to you. In addition to employer reimbursement and self-funding, you may be eligible for a combination of loans, grants, scholarships and/or bursaries.
Student loans in Canada are managed at the provincial level, so your first step is usually visiting your province’s student aid website. In many cases, that single application also connects you to federal funding, although this varies by province.
Taking a bit of time to explore your provincial student aid website early can make the process feel much more manageable. You’re encouraged to familiarize yourself with your provincial student aid website as soon as possible if you are considering a loan. We want you to feel informed and in control as you learn what to expect.
One of the most helpful things you can do when it comes to funding your education is plan ahead. There are a few key things that can catch students off guard, so it’s important to understand student loan fundamentals.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Student funding is approved one academic year at a time. That means you’ll need to reapply each year you continue your studies. Marking those deadlines early can help you avoid interruptions in funding.
Funding doesn’t always cover the full cost of tuition or living expenses. Planning for additional costs ahead of time can help you feel more prepared and avoid surprises.
Student loans are tied to your active enrolment. If your enrolment changes or you miss a term you were funded for, it can impact your loan status and may trigger repayment earlier than expected.
Changes to your course load can affect your funding. Moving between full-time and part-time studies may require updates or additional documentation.
Thankfully, all of these situations can be managed. Staying proactive and keeping communication open can make the entire process smoother and less stressful.
“The best way to stay ahead is to plan early, reapply on time each year, stay enrolled in all funded terms, and reach out as soon as something changes in your studies,” says Jivi.
Starting early gives you more time to explore your options, gather the right information and build a plan that works for your situation.
When you understand how funding works and know where to go for help, you can focus less on uncertainty and more on your education and your future. You don’t have to have everything figured out to get started. You just need to know where to turn for guidance.
